From Absence to Presence: Blurred Consciousness and Sleep States

چکیده
The ability to be aware of and interact with the external environment is a basic evolutionary requirement of all organisms. Technology’s impact on human cognitive functioning has significantly impacted this capacity, suggesting a need to rethink presence. This paper describes conceptualizations related to the consciousness of presence from a sleep-wake research perspective. Keywords--Absence, Presence, Sleep, Alertness, Performance, Microsleep

Are There Levels of Consciousness?
The notion of a level of consciousness is a key construct in the science of consciousness. Not only is the term employed to describe the global states of consciousness that are associated with post-comatose disorders, epileptic absence seizures, anaesthesia, and sleep, it plays an increasingly influential role in theoretical and methodological contexts. However, it is far from clear what precis...
متن کاملEffect of Acute and Chronic Heat Exposure on Frequency of EEG Components in Different Sleep-Wake State in Young Rats
The recent literatures indicate that central nervous system (CNS) is highly vulnerable to systemic hyperthermia induced by whole body heating on conscious animals. In the present study, cerebral electrical activity or EEG (electroencephalogram) following exposure to high environmental heat has been studied in moving rats. Rats were divided into three group (i) acute heat stress-subjected to a s...
متن کاملAssessing sleep consciousness within subjects using a serial awakening paradigm
Dreaming-a particular form of consciousness that occurs during sleep-undergoes major changes in the course of the night. We aimed to outline state-dependent features of consciousness using a paradigm with multiple serial awakenings/questionings that allowed for within as well as between subject comparisons. Seven healthy participants who spent 44 experimental study nights in the laboratory were...
متن کاملEffect of Sleep and Consciousness on Consolidation of Implicit motor memory among Youth, Middle-aged and Elderly
Introduction: The purpose of this research was to compare the effect of sleep and consciousness on consolidation based on implicit motor memory enhancement among youth, middle-aged and elderly. Materials and Methods: The sample statistic consisted of 120 (youth, middle-aged and elderly) healthy and right-handed volunteers (40 people from each age group). The groups were availability selected an...
متن کاملPredictable internal brain dynamics in EEG and its relation to conscious states
Consciousness is a complex and multi-faceted phenomenon defying scientific explanation. Part of the reason why this is the case is due to its subjective nature. In our previous computational experiments, to avoid such a subjective trap, we took a strategy to investigate objective necessary conditions of consciousness. Our basic hypothesis was that predictive internal dynamics serves as such a c...
